Borderlines: New iPhone App Built in Louisville

David Yeiser is the designer I’m working with on Menu and Hours so you know I’m a fan of his work. That being said I honestly and sincerely think his latest project, the iPhone game Borderlines, is outstanding. It’s a game that tests your world geography knowledge by showing you outlines of countries. You choose the right country name from a four choices. Oh yeah you’ve only got limited time and you lose time when you get answers wrong and you gain time when you get them right. It sounds incredibly simple and it is from a gameplay perspective but it’s oddly addictive. And it’s actually educational, when you get the answers wrong the game tells you what the correct answer was. Now I can identify Malaysia, Belgium and Somalia and shamefully just learned of a country I’d never heard of called Burkina Faso.

Obviously this is a great game for kids but seriously even adults will get sucked into this game. It’s a game you can pick up and happily kill 2 or 5 or 10 minutes while you’re in line or waiting for an appointment or whatever.

While I was briefly proud of my 460 high score a friend’s 7 year old’s current high score is 10,100 so now I’m just hanging my head in shame as I play again and try to at least break 500.

Update: I broke 1200!

Awkward x 2 at The Green Building

I really like “Awkward x 2″ as the name for a pair of collaborative artists. Beyond having a cool name it sounds like they create really interesting work. I particularly am intrigued by their use of technology as the jumping off point for paintings. Sounds very interesting. I’ll have to check it out soon.

The Awkward rule is that the painting isn’t finished until either artist is sure of who did what. They start their paintings by combining two very different kinds of grid systems, and proceed to generate unpredictable and complex surfaces, combining color and space to evoke energy and movement operating according to a logic which neither painter could have generated alone.

Awkward x 2 uses science and technology as a starting point for much of the work. Paintings range from references of the unimaginable speed at which light particles leave a black hole to technological connections of artists through history who have attempted to replicate the brightest whites known during their lives (i.e. Manet replicating electric light, Mondrian recreating the light from movie projectors, and for Awkward the light of the computer screen).

In the best awkward moment relating to a press release ever one Awkward x 2′s artists left the following comment:

Actually our press release came out with a misprint, Awkward x 2′s policy is that our paintings are not finished until neither artist can tell who did what, the reverse of what the press release says… Kinda awkward…

Heine Brothers is introducing beer and wine into their Eastern Parkway (Bardstown Road) and Blankenbaker Parkway locations. They’re keeping the selection of beers local and the wines organic.

At the Eastern Parkway location they have Falls City, a rotating selection from Agains the Grain and beer from New Albanian Brewing Company. At the Blankenbaker location they’ll have all of those plus a special beer from BBC.

As promised 3 winners were selected at random from all the entries in the Consuming Louisville is Turning 5 birthday giveaway goodness.

Congratulations Kate Allen, Meghan Roof and Amanda James! They were chosen at random but their comments were good ones touching on such subjects at the Arcade Expo, the Peep Mocha at Red Hot Roasters and the Bacon Ball.

Thanks to everyone else who shared things they’ve loved since finding out about them on Consuming Louisville and leaving comments on other posts throughout the month. Your continued support of Consuming Louisville is much appreciated.

Worth The Splurge: Corbett’s

April 30, 2012

I should start off by saying I didn’t actually splurge on an evening at Corbett’s. We were treated to an evening at Corbett’s by a very generous friend of ours in town from California last weekend. That being said, the next time I do want to splurge on a super nice, fancy, excellent meal, it will be at Corbett’s. Considering how infrequently I go out past the Watterson this is a seriously strong endorsement.

I made reservations at the last minute so I didn’t expect the best table in the house. Even so I was a little concerned when we were led down into what used to be, I assume, an unfinished basement. My concerns were misplaced. The lower level was incredibly charming. It’s divided into a few different rooms and the room we were in only had 4 tables. Because I like to eat like I’m 87 years old (that is to say early bird special time) we had the room to ourselves for a good part of our meal and it was just lovely.

The service we received was impeccable, the cocktails we drank were delicious and the food, oh goodness, the food. There’s no need to go into everything dish by dish. I’ll just say that in our party of three there was barely a crumb that wasn’t consumed. Everything was incredible. But! I do want to tell you about one dish specifically because I’m kind of obsessed with it. I’ve found myself daydreaming about it. Last week I had a nasty infection that left me in considerable pain and the antibiotic I’m taking for it initially caused a great deal of stomach upset (thus the near radio silence around here last week) but in my non-nauseous moments more than once I thought “if I could eat anything in the world right now it would be the Parisian Gnocchi from Corbett’s.”

It’s on the first flavors menu at dinnertime so it’s not enough to make a meal of but trust me when I tell you’ll it will leave you happy. It’s a combination of gnocchi, morel mushrooms, English Peas and a Parmesan cream sauce and it is so, so good.

An evening at Corbett’s isn’t cheap, but based on this one experience of mine I think it’s definitely worth it.

Copper Cupcakes Grand Opening Saturday April 28, 2012

Norton Commons is getting a new bakery this week when Copper Cupcake has its grand opening Saturday April 28, 2012. The Copper Cupcake folks have been selling their goods at the J-Town farmers market for a while now so I’m sure they’ve got all of their recipes perfected. I for one absolutely cannot wait to try their signature cupcake, the one they’ve named their whole enterprise after:

Copper Cupcake: Our Signature Cupcake! gingerbread cake with a bourbon caramel core and vanilla bean cream cheese icing

They had me at gingerbread, then again at bourbon caramel and yet again at vanilla bean cream cheese.

“World Book Night is a celebration of reading and books which will see tens of thousands of people share books with others in their communities across America to spread the joy and love of reading on April 23.” That sounds pretty nice right? Well you can participate in it here in Louisville.

Monday April 23 is World Book Night, designed to encourage light readers to discover the love of literature! Community volunteers will give out free special World Book Night Editions of several popular titles. For more information, go to www.worldbooknight.org. One Louisville area volunteer, Angie Boggs, will be at City Girl Farm Coffee, 4600 Shelbyville Rd, with copies of Maya Angelou’s classic “I Know Why The Caged Bird Sings” from 6:30-8:30 pm or while supplies last!

Yay Maya Angelou and yay sharing good books!

Mayor’s Office To Be Food Truck Mecca on Tuesday

April 19, 2012

OK technically not the mayor’s office but the Jefferson and Sixth, the streets right around Metro Hall, will have 10 food trucks lined up to serve you tasty goodness this coming Tuesday, April 24. The trucks will be on the street from 10:30AM-2:30PM.

This is a great idea I think. Having so many trucks in one area will let people who work in the area to be exposed to the vast variety of food that Louisville’s food trucks are providing.

Here are the trucks that will be congregated on Tuesday, I’m sure you’re already familiar with several of them, I’ve thrown in a couple of notes about ones that are new to me:

Louisville Dessert Truck
Holy Mole
Get It On A Bun at Booty’s Diner
San Diego Sandwich Works
Genius In a Box
Seems to focus on breakfast food which I think is an outstanding thing for a food truck to focus on.
Grind
One Hot Tamale
I just heard about One Hot Tamale yesterday and I’m really excited about their offerings. In addition to their meaty offerings it sounds like they say they have “gourmet vegan and vegetarian tameles.” That’s very exciting.
The Traveling Kitchen
Red’s Comfort Food
Bar B Lou, I don’t know anything at all about this one. If someone has the scoop or a link please let me know.

Community Bazaar at Greenhaus This Weekend (April 20-21, 2012)

April 19, 2012

Greanhaus has almost an entire weekend full of goodness to keep you happy and entertained. First on Friday afternoon/evening it’s their “Style, Taste, Design event” that they’re doing in collaboration with Cellar Door Chocolates and Hey Tiger. What exactly does that mean? It’s means Hey Tiger will have a tiny “pop up shop” (those are the thing right now aren’t they?) within Greenhaus for your shopping pleasure and Cellar Door Chocolates is going to be on hand pairing bourbon balls and chocolates with wine and bourbons.

Once you’ve bought your vintage clothing from Hey Tiger and some goodies from Greenhaus you can head over to the Nachbar to sample some fancy simply syrups (see what I did there?) to turn your Derby season Mint Juleps up to 11. The syrups are a collaboration between Greenhaus and Cellar Door Chocolates.

Last but definitely not least, on Saturday from 10AM-4PM there is the “Community Bizarre” taking place at Greenhaus. There will be over 25 “local makers, vendors, and more” on hand. This sounds kind of amazing doesn’t it?
