The latest issue of my favorite magazine, Garden and Gun, alerted me that in March the Paul Paletti gallery will have an exhibit of photography by Kentucky native Shelby Lee Adams. The show will feature works from “Salt and Truth” the new book by Adams.

Salt & Truth is the fourth book from American photographer Shelby Lee Adams [1950-present]. This collection of 80 new photographs, taken over the past eight years, continues a project the artist has been working on now for over 30 years. Together these powerful images of the hollow dwellers of eastern Kentucky, represent a singular access to a world that is historically not very trusting of outsiders, by a photographer who is widely recognized as a master of the medium.

The show is going to open during the March first Friday Trolley Hop on March 3 and Adams will be at the gallery from 5PM-9PM that evening. The show will run until the end of May. The New York Times has a great slideshow of photos and text from “Salt and Truth” that you should check out.

My friend Linda Golden has a photography exhibit up at the Heine Brothers at Gardiner Lane. The photos come from her time in Togo, when she was serving in the Peace Corps and they “feature Togolese women and girls, who were my closest friends during my time in Togo.”

Not only is this interesting work but Linda is donating proceeds from sales from the show to a non-profit organization that provides scholarships to girls in Togo. So go buy good art and do good in the world at the exact same time.

In 2008, the Karren Waid fund became Pathways Togo, a non-profit focused on providing scholarships and mentoring to Togolese girls. This year, they funded 44 scholarships. It costs about $20 a year to send a girl to middle school, and $50 for a year of high school. The photos on display at Heine Brothers are $50 each. I will be donating any proceeds from the show to Pathways Togo (minus Heine’s fee).

You can preview the photos here. And if you want to go ahead and make a donation to Pathways Togo you can do that online.

Update: Linda tells me they’re still hanging the show as of this morning, December 13 at 9AM. So it should be completely up by later this afternoon.

I like the way she sees the world, or more specifically the things she sees that she chooses to show with us, her audience. Sarah is having a new show at Salvo and there’s an opening reception for it tomorrow night that you should check out. I can’t make it to the reception but I’ll definitely head over to Salvo to check it out soon.

Wendover City is located along interstate 80 on the western border of Utah, and is famous for the nearby Bonneville Salt Flats where land speed records are made. During World War II, the Wendover Army Air Field was a training base for bomber pilots, including the crew of the Enola Gay, which dropped the bomb on Japan in 1945. This summer I traveled to Utah on a reconnaissance mission, brainstorming project ideas to apply for the Wendover Residence Program, run by the Center for Land Use Interpretation. The work in this exhibit is inspired by my explorations of Wendover and its regions.

A couple weeks ago photographer Raven Mathis sent me an email introducing herself and offering to give away a free photography session to one lucky Consuming Louisville reader. You know how I love to give you all stuff so I was thrilled.

Raven landed in Louisville in 2008 when her husband came here for residency. Since I am intimately acquainted with the relocation demands of a spouse in medicine I am willing to overlook the fact that Raven told me she is “huge Buckeye fan and bleeds scarlet and grey.” I asked her to tell me somethings that as a relatively recent transplant to Louisville she loves about our fair city. Her list included: the river, beautiful buildings down town and rolling hills all right at her doorstep.” She described Louisville thusly: “treasure-trove of beautiful artwork, rich melting pot of cultures and just a dash of vintage boutique to make this place 100% grand!”

OK so here’s the scoop on the giveaway:

Free family, hs senior or engagement session
plus a 4×6 spiral bound image book of 20-30 images from the session (total value $250).

Restrictions:
Giveaway Session can not be combined with any other offers, session rate can not be used towards wedding packages, 4×6 spiral bound book of 20-30 images only – can not be substituted nor refunded for cash, no digital images are supplied. Winner is responsible for any and all further image purchases at the current LMMP Photography a’la carte rate. Winner will be asked to sign a release to allow LMMP to include session images in their hard copy and digital portfolio at photographer’s discretion. Session is non-transferable, nor refundable for any cash value. Session must be fulfilled by March 1st, 2011.

To be entered to win just leave a comment telling us how you’d use the prize. New family photos? Solo shoot of your favorite niece? I’ll choose one winner at random from all the entries I receive by 2PM on Friday September 24, 2010. The winner will be notified by email.

I am not well versed enough in either architecture, historic preservation or modern commercial development to have much of an educated opinion on the whole Iron Quarter debacle that is currently on so many minds. I know smarter minds than mind though have given it a great deal of thought and are very concerned about the potential demolition of the Whiskey Row/Iron Quarter buildings.

To help fight that potential demolition Louisville photographer Billy Grubbs is selling prints of a beautiful photograph he made of the buildings in question and he’s donating profits to a local preservation group. If you are of the mind that these buildings need to be saved this fundraiser is a double win for you because you get to help save the buildings and get beautiful art.

The owner has already began applying for permits to demolish the buildings, but there is still time to stop him. If the community can declare these buildings Louisville landmarks, then we can help save the buildings. In order to complete the landmarking process, 200 signatures and $500 must be provided for each building. There are a total of 6 endangered buildings, so a total of $3000 must be raised. In order to help fund this project, I am selling prints of the Whiskey Row buildings. If you would like to help out and purchase the photo below, please fill out the order form at the bottom of the page. All print prices include mounting, lamination, and shipping.

So I was in the car the other day and heard a commercial for a company that does “glamour” photography. You know the one I’m talking about and I’m sure you’ve heard their commercials offering a Valentine’s Day special. Let me pause for a second and remind you that I’m a prude and blushing right now about what I’m about to write. OK.

I bring this commercial up only to say if you’re going to do this kind of thing (and you know the kind of thing I’m talking about when Valentine’s Day and photography are the key words) you should do it right. Hire a local kick ass professional: namely Courtney Paris of Louisville Boudoir. Take one look at the Louisville Boudoir website and I think you’ll agree that her work is, well, hot (oh gracious am I blushing).

OK, I’ve given you all the information you need on this subject, let us never speak of it again, particularly during the daytime.
