Super Bowl not your thing? How about really interesting documentaries? The Trilliquin Center (on Bardstown Road near the new North End Cafe Highlands location) is hosting a movie night this Sunday, February 5, and they’ll be screening a film called Wasteland.

The event is free but a donation of $5 is suggested and the screening starts at 6PM.

Wasteland is an amazing true story tells of a successful artist who visits Rio de Jenero and the people who have built their lives around the largest landfill in the world. With their help, he creates amazing art (using trash from the landfill) and sells it for tens of thousands of dollars. Giving the money to the trash workers, he changes the course of their lives.

Donations will go to the Louisville Visual Art Association’s Open Doors program. It is an umbrella program of classes and art enrichment experiences designed to give a voice to under-served populations including the at-risk youth, refugees and immigrants, senior citizens, victims of domestic abuse and more.

My friend Linda Golden has a photography exhibit up at the Heine Brothers at Gardiner Lane. The photos come from her time in Togo, when she was serving in the Peace Corps and they “feature Togolese women and girls, who were my closest friends during my time in Togo.”

Not only is this interesting work but Linda is donating proceeds from sales from the show to a non-profit organization that provides scholarships to girls in Togo. So go buy good art and do good in the world at the exact same time.

In 2008, the Karren Waid fund became Pathways Togo, a non-profit focused on providing scholarships and mentoring to Togolese girls. This year, they funded 44 scholarships. It costs about $20 a year to send a girl to middle school, and $50 for a year of high school. The photos on display at Heine Brothers are $50 each. I will be donating any proceeds from the show to Pathways Togo (minus Heine’s fee).

You can preview the photos here. And if you want to go ahead and make a donation to Pathways Togo you can do that online.

Update: Linda tells me they’re still hanging the show as of this morning, December 13 at 9AM. So it should be completely up by later this afternoon.

I was pleasantly surprised to find out yesterday was opening day for the new location of the North End Cafe in the Highlands. I was even more pleasantly surprised when I rolled in there for an early lunch (of breakfast food of course) and was told that I was the first official customer ever at the North End Cafe Highlands. Lucky me!

This new location of the North End Cafe is so very close to my house. Walking for excellent vegetarian biscuits and gravy FTW! The decor of the building has changed significantly since Club Grotto was in the space. Where Grotto was dark and somber, North End Cafe is bright and warm.

The menu from the original North End Cafe location has been ported over and updated. I asked my server if the menus of the two locations were going to be identical and she said they are going to be. The hours of the two locations are the same as well:

Monday 8AM-2PM
Tuesday-Thursday 8AM-10PM
Friday-Saturday 8AM-11PM
Sun 8AM-9PM

One of the very, very few things my little area of the Highlands has been missing, in my humble opinion, is a bar that you can grab a quick drink after work at with a friend or meet a client for drinks at. We’ve got great pubs and bars of course but I’m talking about a slightly more grown up bar (for lack of a better term) in walking distance. With the North End Cafe’s opening we’re not missing that anymore. Gracious I do love my neighborhood.

I know this movie didn’t get great reviews and some people think it’s super cheesy but I freaking love The Addams Family. It’s one of the few movies that I remember going to see in high school where the night really was about the movie, not running around with friends or whatever. Raul Julia, Anjelica Houston, Christina Ricci, all brilliant.

I would love to see it on the big screen again but that double feature from a few weeks back I mentioned? Well it ended at midnight and I barely stayed awake for the end of Addams Family Values. I’m officially too old and boring for the midnight movie (unless of course they finally show Love Actually at the midnight movie, in that case I’m totally there).

I finally swung by there today to find out exactly what their hours are and hopefully get a menu.

The menu thing didn’t happen as they’re only open for dinner and I stopped by during the day. Their signage does say “tempura and teriyaki” though so I’m really hopeful for a tofu teriyaki dish.

Here are the hours they have posted on their door:
