Sounds like the latest incarnation of The Makery is up and running with new ideas and programs.

Have something you’ve been working on? Have something you want to start making? Just want to hang out? Come to BYOP (Bring Your Own Project) Night at The Makery!

All skills and skill levels welcome. Just bring your own supplies and ideas and we’ll shoot the breeze while sharing skills and motivation.

We hope to make this a regular event, so if you can’t come this round, there’s always next time!

Call for Artists

Folks from the Belknap Neighborhood Association asked me to let you know that they are currently accepting applications for artists to participate in this year’s Belknap Art and Music Festival which will take place October 8-9, 2010.
This is sort of late notice since the applications are due Wednesday July 14 but I just got the info yesterday.

The Makery is Moving

For the third time in 3 years (at least I’m pretty sure my math is right on this) The Makery is moving. The reasons given on The Makery’s blog are a little vague…

The move is a huge step toward making The Makery a more community based space still bringing to Louisville some of the best the handmade community has to offer.

…but I’m excited for a couple reasons. First, I’m glad to see another retail outlet go into the space that Kopilot used to occupy. As awesome as Bardstown Road is there are other areas of the Highlands that can use some business love as well. Second, I’m hoping this means The Makery is growing into something maybe like Home Ec Shop in Los Angeles. That’s pure speculation on my part and I fully admit that I could be way off but that’s what I’m hoping for.

I haven’t gotten confirmation on when The Makery’s new location is going to be open so you might want to call before you head over: 410-2132.

Hey Tiger will be moving from Barret Avenue into The Makery’s spot on Bardstown Road.

Midnights at the Baxter: The Sandlot (July 3, 2010)

The Sandlot? According to the release date of this movie I would have been a junior in high school (dating myself!) so I probably thought I was too cool for a movie like this so I have no idea about the entertainment value you this film offers you. However the poster got me thinking about Stand By Me, I really wish they would show that at Baxter Avenue. Either I’m getting even more old and boring (likely) or Baxter Avenue and I are just really out of synch this summer, the only midnight movie of the summer that I personally am really looking forward to is Serenity on August 28. Joss Whedon forever!

It’s time for another Car Free Happy Hour. If you’re biking over there make sure you’ve got a rack for your water bottle on your bike cause it’s going to be miserably hot again on Tuesday.

Join fellow bicycling enthusiasts on Tuesday June 29, from 5:30 pm to 8:00 pm for the monthly Car-Free Happy Hour! This month, we’re meeting at Dragon King’s Daughter Japanese restaurant, at 1126 Bardstown Road (one block from Grinstead Dr).

The Car-Free Happy Hour is a time for bicyclists, pedestrians, and transit users to come together and learn about different projects regarding sustainable transportation here in Louisville

Coming Soon: The Bard’s Town

My friend and fellow foodie Rob Yoder sent me a heads up on the business that is finally coming to the long neglected corner of Bardstown Road and ~~Spring~~Speed Avenue (formerly Big Dave’s Outpost and way, way formally Judge Roy Bean’s). Called The Bard’s Town it’s going to be a restaurant/theater/performance space.

Coming soon to the corner of Bardstown Rd and Speed Avenue in the Louisville Highlands, The Bard’s Town is a truly unique concept: a bottom floor that consists of a 60-seat restaurant and 30-seat lounge, each serving our delectable Bard’s Bites and Beverages. Refined yet affordable, The Bard’s Town Restaurant is sure to having you coming back for more. Opening July 2010.

What really sets The Bard’s Town apart, however, is the second floor–home to The Bard’s Town Theatre. This 70-seat theatre comes equipped with 70 chairs (with tables!), food and drink service, and some of the finest entertainment in Louisville. Sounds pretty cool doesn’t it? Of course it’s coolness quotient is boosted by the fact that it’s in easy biking or walking distance from my house. I’ll be anxiously waiting to see their menu.

Midnights at the Baxter: Entire Indiana Jones Trilogy (June 12, 2010)

The Midnights at the Baxter series is kicking off with a bang this year. All three Indiana Jones movies in one night (no, that fourth Indiana Jones movie doesn’t really exist, it was a bad dream). That’s right all three movies! And for only $12. That’s quite a deal but there’s no way in the world I’d be able to stay awake through all three. Hmm……$12 for the first two, which are my favorites anyway, is still a good deal. Hmmm, something to consider.

It’s our 150th film engagement, so come out and enjoy the entire Indiana Jones trilogy (sans Crystal Skull) in one night – June 12 for 12 bucks – beginning at 10:00 PM.

WHY Louisville is Turning 5!

Everybody’s favorite peddler of t-shirts, mugs, knickknacks, fleur de lis paraphernalia and what have you is turning 5 years old this month. Because they’re good people they’re throwing party to celebrate their growth from toddler to big kid and giving you a t-shirt and a good time on Saturday June 19.

In honor of the five year anniversary and as a show of appreciation to its customers for their support over the years, the store will be giving away a free WHY Louisville T-shirt with purchase on Saturday, June 19 from 10am to 8pm (while supplies last – see website for details). Other festivities include live appearances by “The Bearwolf”, the store’s mascot, as well as Abraham Lincoln and Col. Sanders impersonators.

The free t-shirt details are essentially while supplies last, no guarantee on your size being available and you must make a minimum purchase of $15. Fair enough? I think so.

When my beloved friend M. comes to visit from Los Angeles (which she does once or twice a year) we always make a stop at WHY Louisville. She loves the place and it makes me so happy to know she’s roaming around L.A. wearing “502″ t-shirts.

Dundee Tavern Grilled Cheese, I’m a Fan

The other night B, Grace and I walked over to Dundee Tavern for dinner. It had been quite a while since we’d been there. If fact I think it was during the “we have no power because of the windstorm that Ike deposited on us.” We watched football, B drank beer and I probably ate chicken tenders because I was stress eating (Bad mostly vegetarian person! Bad mostly kosher person!). Anyway since it had been a while since we’d been there I wasn’t sure what the vegetarian options were going to be. I was pleasantly surprised to find several fish options (fine I’m a mostly pescatarian), a cheese pizza, as well as several vegetarian friendly appetizers and salads. But what did I order? The Texas Grilled Cheese. And I’m so glad I did. It was ridiculously good.

The Texas Grilled Cheese consists of your choice of two cheese melted altogether deliciously between two pieces of Texas toast. Let’s do a little comfort food checklist for a minute. Cheese? Check. Carbs? Check. Warm, gooey goodness? Check. Comfort food FTW.

I chose cheddar and swiss cheese on my sandwich and I had potato salad as my side item. Such a simple meal but I’ve got to tell you it was one of the most enjoyable meals I’ve had out in a while. It was cheap ($5.99), delicious, great outdoor seating so we could enjoy the weather and have Grace with us, and the waitress was really nice. I couldn’t have found a single thing to complain about even if I tried really hard.
