As far as fundraisers go this seems like it would be a pretty good one because it’s going to feature food from several of East Market’s best restaurants. If the poster is to be believed even a couple restaurants that aren’t even open yet (Decca, Bistro Voliere) are going to be represented at the event as well. On top of the good food you’ll get to see excepts of upcoming Humana Festival plays. And you’ll be supporting a very cool arts program in our city. Like I said, as far as fundraisers go this one seems pretty darn good.

Loosen your tie and enjoy cold beer from local breweries, sample some tasty bites from a delicious array of NuLu eateries and neighboring restaurants, all in support of Actors Theatre of Louisville. Plus, get an inside scoop on the upcoming Humana Festival of New American Plays-the premiere new play festival in the nation-with excerpts from the shows performed by Actors Theatre’s Acting Apprentice Company. There will also be a chance to enter to win a Humana Locals Pass.

Thursday February 23, 2012
6:30PM

Tickets: $25 for Go Board Members, $35 for Non-Members.
Proceeds go to support the Actors Theatre Apprentice Company

The latest issue of my favorite magazine, Garden and Gun, alerted me that in March the Paul Paletti gallery will have an exhibit of photography by Kentucky native Shelby Lee Adams. The show will feature works from “Salt and Truth” the new book by Adams.

Salt & Truth is the fourth book from American photographer Shelby Lee Adams [1950-present]. This collection of 80 new photographs, taken over the past eight years, continues a project the artist has been working on now for over 30 years. Together these powerful images of the hollow dwellers of eastern Kentucky, represent a singular access to a world that is historically not very trusting of outsiders, by a photographer who is widely recognized as a master of the medium.

The show is going to open during the March first Friday Trolley Hop on March 3 and Adams will be at the gallery from 5PM-9PM that evening. The show will run until the end of May. The New York Times has a great slideshow of photos and text from “Salt and Truth” that you should check out.

Next Friday night, January 13, 2012, the latest eatery to grace East Market will be opening its doors for a preview party/fundraiser for Slow Food Bluegrass. Taco Punk has been pleasing Louisville taco lovers at the Douglass Loop Farmers Market over the past several months. Since I’m not out and about much on Saturday mornings I have yet to try them for myself so I’m super excited the restaurant is opening and I can grub on some tacos for lunch soon.

For $10 you can get an early look at Taco Punk the restaurant and get a meal next Friday night. For $25 you get all that plus a Slow Food membership and a raffle entry. Not a bad deal. You’ll need to order your tickets for the event in advance which you can easily do online.

The local web has been abuzz this week with news of restaurants closing (Zeppelin Cafe) and as of yet unconfirmed rumors of restaurants closing (3rd Avenue Cafe). Derby City Espresso is one of those that was in the rumors camp. But I’d also heard a rumor that DCE wasn’t actually going to close, it was just going to evolve into something different. So I asked shop owner Matthew Landan if he’d like to share the actual story.

He said he’s not quite ready to spill the beans on the whole situation yet. What he was comfortable telling me though is that yes, Derby City Espresso is closing in a week. Implicit in that message was that while the Derby City Espresso we know and love is going away something else, with Landan at the helm, is going to rise up in its place. DCE is saying goodbye in style with lots of music and events and in its going away there is a hint as to what is to come:

Tonight (Thursday December 1, 2011) we have David Scott and friends including the Shovel Bums and Katy Rene.

Tomorrow for first Friday we have the rock bands Deer Meet and Turf War plus the Blackout Band and Lil Cheezers will be parked outside the shop.

Saturday Dec 3 we have singer songwriter Benjamin Logan Knight + Met City + folk rock act An Old Friend

Next Tuesday we have the Louisville gypsy Jazz Jam (same folks who put on the recent Djangofest at Bellerman)

Wednesday December 7 we have the eighth installment of The Word Spoken – The city’s premiere underground spoken word poetry slam and open mic.

Thursday December 8 is the closing party with music by Babyfishmouth, Yo Majesty & The Erascists + The Half Mile Millionaires.

We’re gonna have some great specials and we now serve wine and spirits as well! Coffee, teas, bourbon, wine and craft beers all in one spot! For one week only!

Did you catch the clue? “Coffee, teas, bourbon, wine and craft beers.” The key word there is bourbon. If I’m not mistaken Matthew just got the liquor license (at least that’s what this Facebook post seems to indicate) this week. I cannot imagine he’s gone through the time and expense of getting a liquor license for one week only. So I’m guessing that after his annual winter hiatus Matthew is going to open a new establishment in the DCE location with coffee, beer, cocktails and even food.

Time will prove me right or wrong. Matt indicated he’s planning to give the full story of what his plans are around the first of the year.
