This topic is far, far from my area of expertise but I had multiple people ask me to post about this event so share with you I must!

But since I do know so little about it I’m going to quote heavily from two of the people who asked me to share the info with you:

Ruric-Amari is a professional Bellydance and Bollywood performer and teacher based in Louisville, where she runs a studio and three dance troupes. ‘Belly Dancer’ is a mischievous word, frequently understood to mean ‘stripper’ or ‘lap dancer’ or simply ‘a pretty girl in a costume gyrating from table to table.’ However, it can also mean dance entertainment that moves and delights. That’s the end of the spectrum that Ruric works in. Works HARD in.

This month, Ruric is also the local sponsor for Club Bellydance (composed of five dancers from the Bellydance Superstars, the most famous touring belly dance group in the Western world), which will be coming to the Clifton Center on Friday, October 7, for a joint concert with some of the best belly dance and ethnic dancers in the region.

Bellydance Superstars, an internationally renowned performance group that has been showcased in venues from Paris’ Folies Bergere to arenas on the Lollapalooza tour, is bringing the new Club Bellydance tour to Louisville on Friday, Oct. 7. Club Bellydance features Bellydance Superstars’ dance director Sabah along with dancers Moria, Stefanya, Colleen and Victoria with all new choreography.

Created in order to connect Bellydance Superstars with bellydance troupes across the nation, Club Bellydance features local performers at each venue, and the Louisville show at the Clifton Center’s Eifler Theatre will feature the best in the region. Tickets are $20 ($2 fee for online purchase) or $25 at the door. Tickets can be purchased online. The Clifton Center is located at 2117 Payne St. Doors open at 7 p.m., and the show starts at 7:30.

The Espectaculos Culturales Performance Series

What a great series title right? Even if you don’t speak Spanish (and maybe particularly if you don’t speak Spanish) you know it’s an awesome title.

I have yet to make it to La Catalana (spending moratorium only recently ended) but I’m anxious to go. I’ve never really experienced Catalonian cuisine. If you’re in the same boat you might consider visiting on an upcoming Friday or Saturday evening.

La Catalana restaurant, in association with Flamenco Louisville and friends, is presenting programs of cultural entertainment to accompany its Mediterranean menu. Performances include traditional Flamenco music and dance; Middle Eastern dance; Gypsy music from the Eastern Mediterranean and solo Flamenco musicians on guitar and piano.

The Brown-Forman Nutcracker (yes Virginia that’s the official name) opens this Friday night December 5 and runs through December 20, 2009. B and I are going to go see it on and she is beyond excited at that fact.

Not only are we going to see it but I’ve got two pair of tickets to give away so you can go see it too. The tickets are for the Thursday December 17th show.

Flamenco and Spanish Food at Blu Friday June 12, 2009

If you like Spanish food and flamenco this sounds like what you need to do Friday night. Flamenco Louisville is bringing in a special guest and BLU is serving a special Spanish menu.

Flamenco Louisville and BLU Mediterranean Grille invite
you to a very special evening of flamenco music and dance and fine Mediterranean
food, Friday, June 12, 2009, from 7:00-9:30 pm. The professional musicians
and dancers of Flamenco Louisville will be joined by renowned flamenco artist,
Marija Temo. Marija is unique for her status in the flamenco world as a
“triple threat” – dancer, singer and guitarist. This is a new opportunity to see
Marija in Louisville, and a treat to see her in the
intimate “tablao” environment.

BLU has prepared a special Taste of Spain menu, with
Sangria to complete the meal. The regular menu will be served as well. The
tradition of good food and flamenco performance is widespread in
Spain and goes all the way back to
the “golden age” of the Cafes Cantantes in the early 19th century.

I don’t know a lot about this event and I think this is the first year for it so I can’t reference last year’s show to give you more info. However it sounds potentially interesting and it benefits charity so I’d be remiss not to give you the information I have on it.

“Performers will sing, dance, share visual art, perform spoken word poetry, make music and share survival stories from Louisville to Africa to Romania. The night will truly be one of inspiration and hope.

Among locals, there will be performances by the West Louisville Boys Choir, the Christ Church For Our Community, and poetry from the Mary Hurst School for girls.”

Peak Summit Groove and Dance Festival October 11, 2008

If you’re a fan of live music this certainly seems like the event of the weekend for you. It’s going to feature 27 bands, individual artists, and DJs on 10 outdoor and indoor stages on and around Shelbyville Road.

There will also be a fashion show, a comedy show and an art show.

Entrance to the event is a $10 wristband that you’ll buy from a tent in the BBC parking lot. Festivities kick off at 7PM, Saturday October 11, 2008.

Oh, and just to give you some idea of what the crowd might be like at this event here’s who the event organizers say they’re looking for:

“Bring your good attitude, a strong desire to dance and party, 21 and older please, and most importantly bring an open mind to new music.”

Bourbon Baroque presents Thunder and Dance

The Bourbon Baroque folks assure me this event is still on and will be fabulous. I had this scheduled to post before, you know, we all lost power. So I can’t tell you for sure whether or not this performance is still going to happen. Does anyone know if the water tower has power?

I’ve sent an email to the Bourbon Baroque folks and as soon as I get a confirmation one way or the other I’ll update this post. If it is still on it sounds like it will be a really fantastic way of getting your mind off local weather related craziness. And also a nice evening spent in the comfort of electricity if you’re still out of power like many of us are anticipating being.

Bourbon Baroque is kicking off their new season this Saturday night with Thunder and Dance.

Bourbon Baroque: Louisville’s Period Instrument Ensemble is pleased toannounce the
openingproject of its 2008-2009season: Thunder and Dance. Artistic Directors John
Austin Clarkand Nicolas Fortin have conjured upa season of new and familiar works from
the Baroque era with local arts groups such as The Kentucky Opera, Louisville Youth
Choir, and Choral Arts Society. In keeping with its inaugural season’s intensity, Bourbon
Baroque welcomes guestartists aplenty along with its local early music core group.
Works on the menu for this season include: Telemann’s Don Quichotte auf der Hochzeit
des Comachos (KYOpera); C.P.E Bach’s Harpsichord Concertoin D Major; J.S. Bach’s St.
Matthew Passion (Choral Arts Society); and a repeat performance of Boccherini’s Stabat
Mater.

Thunder and Dance will feature two Louisville premiere guest artists: Megan Hart,
soprano; and Caroline Copeland, baroque dancer. Soprano Megan Hartwill prepare a set
of Handel “storm”arias featuring texts that cast lightening down from the heavens,
beckon clouds of darkness, and conjure upwinds from the desolate sea. Baroque Dancer
Caroline Copeland prepares a rarely performed Telemann orchestral suite La Putain. Ms.
Copeland brings her original choreography based on codified 18th
century dance notation
with a modern twist. Her sultry, sensuous interpretation of this suite’s dances will surely
leave the audience understanding completely what was on Telemann’s mind as he composed
each syncopation. Ms. Copeland’s appearance will also spark additional educational
workshops at local professional and educational institutions. Also on the program: J.S.
Bach’s Orchestral Suite No. I.

Did you know we had an official Flamenco dance company in Louisville? Me either. Apparently we do cause they’re performing Friday July 11 at Blu. Blu will also be serving a special Spanish menu that evening, complete with sangria (though the regular menu will be available as well).
