Film producer and former (currently part time?) Louisville resident John Paul Rice’s new film will be shown at 2PM on Saturday February 18 at the Clifton Center as part of the 4th Annual Derby City Film Festival.

‘MOTHER’S RED DRESS’ is a tragic love story/psychological drama that deals with the effects of child abuse, mental illness, and domestic violence.

Our goal in making this film was to tell an important story about the complexities of these issues and yet profile the incredible possibilities for human endurance, resilience and hope through healing.

I’ve got two pairs of tickets to see “Mother’s Red Dress” to give away. I’ll choose the winners at random from all the entries I receive by 3PM on Monday February 13, 2012. To be entered to win just leave a comment telling us about your favorite Kentucky film connection. Could be a film set here or shot here, could be a writer or director from here, your choice.

I’ve mentioned before how important B and I think the work that the Alzheimer’s Association does. So despite the fact that I don’t think I’ve written about anything happening at the casino across the river before I’m pleased to be giving away a pair of tickets to an Alzheimer’s Association fundraising event that’s happening over there.

Guests at the Alzheimer’s Association’s annual “Making Memories” dinner and auction will enjoy tasting a selection of Brown-Forman spirits, and will have the opportunity to bid on luxurious auction items.

The event will be held at Horseshoe Casino in Southern Indiana on Saturday, Feb. 25.

Based on the theme, “A Night on Bourbon Street,” the fundraiser will feature New Orleans-inspired cuisine, tasting of Brown-Forman spirits, and live music. Among the items up for bid is a New Orleans getaway with airfare included.

The event benefits programs of the Alzheimer’s Association’s Greater Kentucky & Southern Indiana Chapter, including the 24-Hour Helpline, Medic Alert/Safe Return Program, Family Support Groups and respite for caregivers.

Open seating tickets for Making Memories are $100 per person or $1,500 for a table sponsorship including a reserved table for 10. Contact Devin Roos, 502-451-4266, to purchase. A discounted room rate of $209/night at the Horseshoe Casino Hotel also is available for Making Memories guests.

So the winner is going to get two tickets to this event where there will be good booze, good food, gambling and chances to bid on cool stuff for a good cause. This is a good thing.

To be entered to win leave a comment telling us about a senior citizen who has enriched your life. I’ll choose one winner at random from all the entries I receive by 3PM on Wednesday February 8, 2012.

The only caveat for voting is that since a radio show is claiming credit for creating #shermaggedon (though I doubt any of us Twitter nerds heard it there, I know I didn’t) I can’t give anyone a gift card for that entry.

I joked on Twitter yesterday that we should have a contest for the best hashtag/name for the current traffic nightmare being caused by the bridge shutdown. Then I decided to ask Heine Brothers if they’d donate a gift card as the prize for the contest and what do you know, they said yes! So let’s do this.

I’ll be accepting nominations for the best name or hashtag for this bridge related traffic fiasco for the next 24 hours. Leave a comment with your entry Since I can’t troll everybody’s twitter accounts you can also drop a link to a hashtag you’ve seen or created on Twitter. The originator of the hashtag (as far as I can document) will get the prize.

After all the nominations are in we’ll go to public voting. I’ll tally the votes on Friday morning and the winner will get a $10 gift card to Heine Brothers.

I’ll start with one that greatly amuses me:

Andrew Paulin’s #shermageddon

To be entered to win just leave a comment telling us about your favorite family dish. Something your mom or your grandma or your aunt made (or still makes) that you just love. A dish that makes you start thinking of home and family the instant it’s mentioned.

For me I think I’d go with butterscotch pie. My grandma made and my aunt still makes butterscotch pie that’s out of this world. I had a piece of butterscotch pie from a bakery I love here in town a few weeks back and it was good but it just wasn’t the same as grandma’s and I got a little sad.

I’ll choose one winner at random from all the entries I receive by 4PM on Thursday August 11, 2011. I’ll be shipping this book to the winner so I’m limiting the contest to folks in the continental United States. I’m just putting that limit out there because Consuming Louisville does actually have international readers. It’s a little bit of home for Louisville people abroad who get homesick. So, hi y’all!

Friends the folks at Homemade Ice Cream and Pie Kitchen must be terribly fond of you. How else can you explain the fact that they’re giving away 5 pints of their special, limited time only “Kentucky Gold Bourbon” ice cream to you, Consuming Louisville readers?

A special blend of imported chocolate, premium bourbon, pecans, caramel and fudge, we are making this special blend of ice cream for just a few weeks.

This is the ice cream created especially for the Barnstable Brown Gala.

Tell me that ice cream doesn’t sound absolutely fabulous. You can’t do it because it sounds simply divine. I mean it’s a given that chocolate and bourbon go together (ask me about my bourbon chocolate pudding sometime) and then you add in pecans, caramel and fudge? That’s some next level goodness right there.

To be entered to win all you need to do is leave a comment telling us about your most memorable Derby related experience. I’ll choose five winners at random from all the entries I receive by 5PM on Monday May 2, 2011. Winners will be notified by email.

Now this Derby memory doesn’t have to be about that one time you went to the track. It can be anything Derby related. For example if I was entering I’d mention the year a pregnant woman thought she’d won the pool of money at our Derby party and was so excited I thought she was going to give birth right then and there. Of course she didn’t actually win, I did thus the memorable experience.

Homemade Ice Cream and Pie Kitchen has made its way to Twitter. And what do you know? I was their very first Twitter follower. We’ll ignore how that probably means I spend far too much time on the interwebs and instead focus on the good part of this story: free stuff for a lucky Consuming Louisville reader (who is also on Twitter).

For being their first follower on Twitter Homemade Ice Cream and Pie Kitchen offered me a gift card as a prize. While I thought that was a very generous offer I said “hey, how about we give a gift card away to a Consuming Louisville reader instead?” The Pie Kitchen was on board with that plan.

So one lucky entrant is going to receive a $20 give card to The Homemade Ice Cream and Pie Kitchen. Since this giveaway is in celebration of their new Twitter account entry for this contest has a Twitter component. First, give @pie_kitchen a shout out on Twitter and tell them if you’re #teampie or #teamicecream. Second, leave a comment here telling us the same.

Get your votes in by 3PM on Friday April 9, 2011. I will choose one winner from the winning team. That is to say if #teampie has more votes the winner will be chosen from #teampie votes. Make sense?

Boy I sure do dig free stuff, particularly free stuff that’s terribly festive. The Titanic after hours party celebrating the temporary Titanic exhibit that is currently at the Louisville Science Center certainly fits the bill. However it’s only free for the first 200 folks to reserve tickets. After that you have to pay $8 for admission. Well that is unless you’re one of the two lucky winners of the pairs of tickets I have to give away. First the scoop on the party:

Louisvillians are invited to “Party like it’s 1912” at a free after-hours event on Saturday, February 13, from 11:40 p.m. to 2:20 a.m. at the Louisville Science Center, 727 W. Main St.

The first 200 people to reserve tickets will be admitted free. The event lasts from the time Titanic hit the ill-fated iceberg (11:40 p.m.) until the time it sank (2:20 a.m.). Guests can visit Titanic: The Artifact Exhibition, featuring 150 authentic artifacts. Titanic-related activities will happen throughout the Science Center. Complimentary desserts will be provided and a cash bar will be available, including themed cocktails: the “Sparkling Rose,” named for the fictional character from blockbuster film Titanic; Captain Smith’s Bourbon Tea, in honor of the Ship’s real captain; and an Iceberg Cocktail.

Guests will be eligible to win a trip for two to Las Vegas to see Titanic: The Artifact Exhibition at the Luxor Hotel and Casino, courtesy of Premier Exhibitions, Inc., the developers of the Exhibition. The Exhibition in Las Vegas features more than 300 artifacts, including the largest Titanic artifact ever retrieved. A massive piece of the Ship referred to as “The Big Piece,” it weighs 15 tons and measuring more than 26 feet long. The Exhibition also features lifelike replicas from Titanic, including the Grand Staircase. The Vegas giveaway, valued at nearly $1,500, includes two tickets to the Exhibition, plus airfare and a two-night stay at the Luxor. Guests must be present to win the Vegas giveaway, and the winner will be announced at the event.

The event is open to those ages 21 and over. Two hundred free tickets are available on a first-come, first-served basis, with a limit of two free tickets per person, by calling (502) 561-6100, ext. 6580. Thereafter, tickets will be available at the discounted rate of $8 per person. (Regular admission to Titanic: The Artifact Exhibition is $18 for adults and $14 for children 2-12). Tickets include all activities, desserts, and admission to Titanic: The Artifact Exhibition and the Science.

To win one of the four tickets I have to give away tell us a good story about seeing James Cameron’s Titanic. I saw it at Tinsel Town when Tinsel Town was new and I had to have someone draw me a map to find our way out there. I’ll also say that I didn’t go of my own free will. B and her best friend just had to go see it and drug me along.

Two winners chosen at at random from all the entries I receive by 4PM on Wednesday February 10, 2010 will each win two tickets.

Yep, you read that right (even though the way I wrote it was a bit confusing wasn’t it?), free breakfast for one year at Wild Eggs for you and whoever you love enough to take with you.

Since opening the first location on Dutchmans Lane and the second in Westport Village, Wild Eggs has served almost one million eggs. Almost. The millionth egg will be served in the next couple of weeks and the lucky person who orders it will win breakfast for two for one year. Each location will have one winner. The rules to participate are simple: just stop by either one of the Wild Egg locations and order an egg dish (no pancakes, waffles, muffins, etc.) in order to have a chance at being served the millionth egg. The more eggs you order, the better your odds of winning!

For those wondering how Wild Eggs actually knows which egg is truly their millionth egg sold, the formula used is quite simple. By looking at inventory records which show exactly how many eggs have been ordered to date, while considering the restaurants average egg consumption rate, the Wild Egg culinary team was able to loosely predict the use of their millionth egg to be sometime in December or January, although the actual date itself is still a mystery.

In order to keep the contest fair between both Wild Egg restaurants, when the egg is discovered, the other Wild Eggs restaurant will be notified. Then the next guests to be served an egg dish at that location will also receive breakfast for two for one year. The award will be given in the form of 104 breakfast vouchers, with two vouchers redeemable per week for a total of 52 weeks. The vouchers are transferable so for those who travel frequently, and the vouchers can be given to someone else to use in your absence.

Dude. This is a contest that I would totally love to win. The problem of course is that whenever I go to Wild Eggs I order pancakes. Damn my love of all things carbohydrate!
