Now someone is and it’s not an individual geek, a startup company or a civic organization, it’s a coffee shop. Yep, Java Brewing Company is hosting a Pecha Kucha event at their new Brownsboro Road location on Monday August 2, 2010.

Only a very few details of the event are listed on the Facebook event page. So I’m not sure if they’re signing up presenters, doing it as kind of open mic, or what the deal is on that. As soon as I do know more though I will pass it on to you with the quickness.

Two different friends have each, on multiple occasions over the last few weeks, mentioned Yew Dell Gardens to B and I. They’ve told us that we need to visit soon. In particular they’ve said I need to get there before August 1 because that’s when the Garden Sculpture Show ends. You see I dug up all the bushes in front of my house and I need at least one garden sculpture to semi-camouflage the gas meter. And I also I just like sculpture.

One of these friends also recommended that we just skip out on work on say a Thursday, take a picnic basket with some good wine and cheese with us and just enjoy the beauty of the gardens, good food and each other’s company. What can I tell you? He’s a romantic. If this heat wave breaks anytime soon I think we’ll follow his suggestion. I want to check out the place, B will absolutely swoon over the gardens and wine and cheese is usually a pretty good idea. All that is secondary to what I’m supposed to be telling you about which is the Hummingbird Festival at Yew Dell Gardens next month.

Held at the height of the hummingbird migration through Crestwood, the Hummingbird Festival promises something for the entire family. Watch as experts catch, band and release hummingbirds. Kids will have the chance to get up close and personal with these speedy creatures, even being able to hold these tiny birds in their hands. Other kid-friendly activities include tales from a local storyteller, bird-themed crafts, and kite-flying in the Yew Dell meadow (so don’t forget to bring your own!). Parents can learn the tricks of attracting hummingbirds to gardens and feeders, and they’ll even be able to take home a new feeder and some hummingbird-attracting plants for their own gardens. We’ll also offer special tours of the gardens for the entire family, and for any shutterbugs, nationally-renowned photographer Russ Thompson will offer tips and advice on how to capture the perfect snapshot.

Saturday August 28, 2010
3PM-6PM from 3-6PM
Festival is free with entrance to the gardens which is $7 for adults, free for kids under 12

Yew Dell Gardens
6220 Old LaGrange Road
Crestwood, KY 40014

Only slightly off topic: We have the world’s best hummingbird feeder in our backyard

Also remind me to tell you about the kite flying disaster B and I had in Cherokee Park once.

On Sunday July 18 the local branch of Bruster’s Real Ice Cream is celebrating National Ice Cream Day with an ice cream eating contest. As far as celebrations in the middle of July go I think eating ice cream is a pretty good one.

This is our third annual celebration and we celebrate it by having an ice cream eating competition at our location. There are 3 age groups – 18 & older, 12-17, and 11 & younger. Each group competes to see who can eat the most amount of ice cream in 2 minutes – and you would be amazed at how much ice cream one can eat! We offer great prizes for the winner of each age group. This year Mike Best’s Meats will be at our location with their grill helping us to celebrate. The festivities begin at 2:00 pm. People can sign up to participate by stopping by the store or by calling the store at 425-9436.

I have never been to Bruster’s because it is a little outside my normal stomping grounds so the only thing I knew about it before last week was that it was a small-ish chain. The folks that own the local Bruster’s sent me a nice email letting me know that all of their ice cream, sorbet, Italian ice, yogurt, shebert and other frozen goodies are made fresh in the store and told me their menu changes daily. I dig that they make everything in house and I’m really glad to see they’ve got some non-ice cream options for our vegan friends.

After I got the email I did a little looking into Bruster’s and it looks to be a good company that takes community service seriously, you know I like that. For example all of their Pennsylvania stores are offering a Pint for Pint special where you get a pint of ice cream for free when you donate a pint of blood. I’ma need the Louisville Bruster’s shop to get on that and then I will promptly schedule my next blood donation.

Krispy Kreme Doughnut Factory, and will be located at 9569 Taylorsville Road in the Jeffersontown Commons shopping center. The new location is Krispy Kreme’s first in the east end of Louisville. The grand opening will be held on the company’s 73rd birthday Tuesday, July 13.

The store will be open Sundays through Thursdays from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m., and Fridays and Saturdays from 6 a.m. to 11 p.m.

Krispy Kreme will hide one dozen Krispy Kreme T-shirts at locations throughout J-Town, in advance of the store opening on July 13. Clues regarding the T-shirts’ locations will be posted daily beginning Tuesday, July 6, on Twitter (@KrispyKremeJtwn) and Facebook (Krispy Kreme J-Town).

The winners of these contests will win a year’s supply of doughnuts. More information about both of these promotions to follow on July 6.

Mexican Chocolate Ole — Our Signature Chocolate ice cream with a hint of spicy cayenne and savory cinnamon. Ole!

Chocolate Orange — If you’ve never experienced the combination of these two very distinctive flavors, you’ve got to try this. It’s a perfect match!
