OK not so early warning since it’s in just a couple weeks but still a little bit of an early warning.
The Writer’s Block Festival is mostly for writers. There are workshops on writing your memoir, playwriting, plot development in young adult fiction, etc. However there are a few festival events that are of interest to even those of us who aren’t writing books, plays, poetry or short stories.
There is the “Art of Letterpress” Workshop with Hound Dog Press. Registration is limited to six people and costs $40.
Learn the art of handset type and letterpress printing with Hound Dog Press. Participants will have the opportunity to design and print their own bookmark keepsake from metal and wood type on one of our tabletop platen presses. We will discuss the history and process of letterpress while demonstrating with our collection of printing presses that range from 1892-1960.
There is also the a series of readings throughout the day at the Swanson Gallery (638 East Market), a keynote reading in the evening at the Cressman Center (free but ticket required) and a print fair of independent publishers at the Green Building (9AM-4PM):
Between readings and before your workshop and after a panel discussion, check out the variety of journals, books, broadsides and chapbooks offered by independent publishers in the region. Interested in finding a publication for your work? This is the place to meet editors and talk to them about what they’re really looking for!
