Yesterday B and I had lunch at Funmi’s Cafe and it was just fantastic. Funmi’s is hidden in the back of the Gardiner Lane shopping center, I don’t think you can see it or its sign from Bardstown Road. It’s worth looking for though. It was my first experience with Nigerian food (though there are other African nations’ dishes represented on the menu as well) and I’m in love. Plantains are one of the great food loves of my life and Funmi’s has plantains available with so many dishes it made me giddy.
Funmi’s Cafe should be on the radar of every vegetarian and vegan in town. Many, many of their dishes are vegan and are clearly marked as such on the menu. There are meat dishes that I’m sure are delicious but I’ll have to return with one of my carnivorous correspondents to report on that for you.
For our lunch we started out with a shared order of Ewa ati Dodo which is African red beans served with fried plantains. It was awesome though I confess the plantains were my favorite part. I also had a bowl of tofu soup which seemed like it was designed just for me. It had tofu, potatoes and a delicious broth.
B had the House Vegan Stew which is a combination of vegetables, tofu, curry and tomato sauce served with rice and plantains(!).
For my entree I ordered Adalu which is African brown beans and corn with tomatoes and onions. It was so very good. So much so that I’m really looking forward to having the leftovers for lunch this afternoon.
All the food at Funmi’s is made to order so you can choose the level of spice you want. I’m a mild girl myself while B goes with medium and both of us were completely satisfied with the spice of our dishes.
Funmi herself came out and chatted with us for a few minutes while we were paying the bill and she is such a lovely person. Really nice owner, amazing food for everyone (vegetarians, vegans, meat eaters); Funmi’s is going into our heavy rotation of favorite restaurants. You can call ahead for carry-out orders (I give it less than one week before we do that) and they do catering. If you hire Funmi’s Cafe to cater your event I want an invitation ok?
