A couple weeks ago I got an email inviting me to visit Najla’s bakery. So on last Thursday I asked ye olde Google maps how in the world to get to Vinecrest Avenue and headed out for a visit.
I’m pretty sure you’ve seen (and probably tasted) Najla’s goods at coffee shops around town. I know I’ve seen them at Heine Brothers, Vint and Java Brewing Company. Said goods run the spectrum from muffins to cookies to ruggelach to brownies to vegan power bars.
The thing you should know about Najla’s is that Najla (yes, there is a Najla!) is passionate about keeping things as fresh and natural as she can. You’re not going to find any high fructose syrup in any of her products, you’re not going to find artificial flavors in them. If you read the ingredient list you’re going to recognize all of them. I like that.
If you don’t frequent any of the fine coffee shops that carry Najla’s goods you can actually do like I did and go out to Vinecrest Avenue and get them directly from the source. That location is both where all of the goodies are made but also home to a small retail location. Because it is the location where all the baking is done they’re not really in a high traffic retail area so the retail element is really small and just has a fraction of their products available at a given time. So think of the retail location as more of a pickup spot. Meaning call and tell them you want a dozen chocolate chip cookies or brownies or whatever and they’ll have them ready for you when you show up. Though if you work in the general vicinity of Najla’s I’m sure you’d have no problem finding a tasty afternoon snack if you swing by there on your break.
What you should really know about Najla’s though is that you can order gift boxes and towers of goodies for your holiday giving. You can order and pick them up yourself or you can pay to have Najla’s deliver them. Say for example you want to give me a Hanukkah gift (you’re so kind!). You could pick out a cookie tower with a half dozen or a dozen cookies of my favorite kinds of cookies. Or say you want to send your favorite client a Christmas gift. You might consider the “The Works” which is a cookie, nut, brownie, toffee tower. You get the picture. The point is that you can get some really impressive gift basket things that are fresh baked locally. I’ve got to think your gift recipients would love them.
Najla gave me a ginormous box of goodies to take with me when I left the bakery and I shared them with several of B’s colleagues. They were greeted with raves all the way around. My personal favorite was the spiced molasses and ginger cookie and the cinnamon roll.
