We Took a Little Staycation (and I recommend it to you)

Last week for my birthday B and I took a little “staycation” in downtown Louisville. It only lasted a little over 24 hours but it was really fantastic so I wanted to tell you about it and recommend you do something similar if you can.

Thursday afternoon we hit Ramsi’s for lunch and Baxter Avenue Theatres for a Harry Potter matinee. Then we headed downtown and checked into 21c. I’ve been to Proof many times for dinner, I’ve spoken at events in the galleries and I’ve even toured a couple rooms at 21c but I’d never spent the night there before. Kids, 21c is a little piece of heaven here in Louisville. They take such good care of you, seriously (they gave me a bucket of Coke Zero!). From the spacious and gorgeous rooms (complete with rubber duckies in the shower!) to the incredible room service menu to the extremely friendly staff. A night at 21c isn’t cheap (and we didn’t make it any cheaper with the room service we ordered for breakfast) but it was worth every penny.

After checking in Thursday night we took a walk to get me some gelato from the Proof gelato cart. As you might imagine it was delicious. Then we headed down to the Slugger Museum. All our years in Louisville and we’d never been to the Slugger Museum. We took the tour and had a great time. Neither one of us are big baseball fans but it was very cool to see the Louisville Slugger process. Also the Norman Rockwell exhibit currently on display in the museum was really neat as well. That exhibit closes August 14 so you should go see it soon.

Thursday night we had dinner at Proof. We had made sure to let them know B was vegan when we made our dinner reservation so they could hopefully accomodate that dietary restriction. Did they ever! There was a special vegan menu printed and waiting for B to order from. That’s serious service. As every meal I’ve ever had at Proof has been this meal was incredible.

After breakfast in our room on Friday morning (I can’t even tell you how in love with room service I am) we headed to the Frazier Museum to check out the Da Vinci exhibit. If you haven’t been to see this exhibit yet you really need to. Being the medical type B loved the huge anatomy sketches Da Vinci made. Being 4 years old at heart I loved the interactive stations and the models of many cool Da Vinci inventions.

After the Frazier museum we headed to the Kentucky Museum of Art and Craft. That was a little bit of a bust since they were in the middle of changing out exhibits so the displays were limited. Even still we bought some things in the gift shop and enjoyed our brief visit.

And because we were still celebrating my birthday we went to the Irish Rover for lunch. The Irish Rover remains forever near and dear to my heart.

Next staycation we’re hitting the Speed Museum and the Ali Center. What are you going to do on your staycation?

What a fun birthday idea! I’m taking a day off work for my birthday on a Monday coming up and have been tossing around ideas for fun ways to spend the day. I’m thinking something outdoor water fun -related.

I just closed on a condo in NuLu, so I’m planning to take next week off as a staycation— I’ll unpack, get furniture together, settle in. I’ll probably play things by ear and might end up just spending most of my time in the condo. We’ll see.
