My Heart is Breaking: The Swan Dive is Closing

October 13, 2010

Food, Vegan, Vegetarian

It’s with a heavy heart that I share this Facebook thread from last night. While I was out of town last week I’d missed a posting from the owner of The Swan Dive looking for a buyer for the restaurant. Then last night I saw an update that just said “open thursday, friday and saturday this week and go from there. buh buy wontons- no more. get your wings this weekend while you still can!!! ps. they’re boneless.”

I asked if that meant they were only staying open long as they have food in stock and the owner confirmed that yes, they are only going to be open until the food and beer they have runs out. This makes me so, so sad. The Swan Dive has great vegetarian pub food, a good deal of it vegan.

I confess that I didn’t go to The Swan Dive as often as I would have liked because it was out of my normal routes and it wasn’t open for lunch. Won’t someone please open up a similar establishment on Bardstown Road that’s open for lunch? Vegetarian pub food is wonderful and I promise to schedule many lunch meetings there.

This sucks, especially since we’ll be moving just down the street!

We live right across the street and have our fingers crossed that someone will continue on with a similarly spirited location in the same place. And yes, being open for lunch would be great. The Swan Dive has been a great neighbor – much better than previous businesses – and we’re sad to see it go. I blame the city for not allowing beers drinking outside or live music inside. We’re waiting with baited breath to see what happens next in that space.

I am dismayed! I have only been there once but it was enough–I just moved to town… I’m being totally serious that my wife and I were considering the location of the Swan Dive as a factor in buying a house… Now where are we going to live???

Seems a little over dramatic, but so far this was the best eats place I’ve been to in Louisville! Sorry, chi-chi places on Bardstown road, you just didn’t have a vegan sandwich like that. Or the atmosphere.

What is with the city stifling businesses like this?
