My sister is currently in Japan visiting her boyfriend and I was terribly disappointed to find out a trip to Tokyo isn’t on her agenda. Think of all the awesome stationery and cool things she could be buying me! < /whining>
Moving on. This weekend is the Library’s annual AnimeCon. And how cool is it that our library has an anime convention? Very. They’re kicking things off a little early when the TOKYOPOP Tour stops by this afternoon. What exactly is TOKYOPOP? Good question.
TOKYOPOP is hailed as the leading youth-oriented entertainment brand in manga (Japanese-style comic books) creation. From the introduction of the first-ever extensive manga publishing program in North America, to the development of manga-originated film, television, and digital entertainment, TOKYOPOP has changed the way teens experience pop culture.
Well ok then. What will they be doing here?
This nationwide tour takes a tricked-out tour bus and the TOKYOPOP’s AGO show crew to hundreds of thousands of fans, in dozens of cities, including our very own Main branch of the Louisville Free Public Library. The tour will stop in more than twenty cities in search of the country’s greatest otaku, the person who best exemplifies a unique passion for all things influenced by Japanese pop culture, and one lucky winner will be crowned America’s Greatest Otaku and will win a trip to Tokyo, Japan. So come out to the Main Library, 301 York Street, this Tuesday, August 10 at 2 p.m. for some pre-AnimeCon excitement with TOKYOPOP.
If you’ve got a kid or teen in your life who digs Japanese anime or you’d like to introduce them to anime you’d be remiss if you didn’t get them registered for AnimeCon this weekend.

Good to see this kind of event; too bad there’s no particular venue for older anime enthusiasts (there’s some quality screenings on the schedule, like Ouran Host Club and Tsubasa Reservoir Chronicle, but I very much doubt there’s a non-skeevy role for an adult-without-teen-in-tow in the audience).
