Heine Brothers is spearheading a new local farming/gardening movement in our community. Called 15Thousand Farmers it’s an ambitious idea that I’m pretty excited about.
We’re helping to create 15Thousand Farmers growing their own food organically in our Louisville backyards in the next five years! 15Thousand of us!! What does that make possible, what would life become here in our neighborhoods, in our community as this possibility unfolds? The idea is a bold one and one that we made up. Maybe it’s never been tried before – how much fun is that!! What will it take to make this happen? You tell me… One thing it will take is a collaboration of many, many folks who want to create something new and amazing with us.
The new house has a decent sized, flat yard and starting a garden is one of the things that B and I are really looking forward to.
In fact just the other I had lunch with a dear friend at Ramsi’s just so I could use a Carmichael’s gift certificate I had to buy Grow Great Grub: Organic Food from Small Spaces.
I won’t make a Saturday meeting but I’ll be following this project’s progress closely and participating in my own way.
Come to our informational meeting Saturday, February 20th at 9 am at Clifton Unitarian Church at 2231 Payne Street, in the basement. We’ll update everyone where we are and where we are headed and you can see how you might take a part in this grand experiment called 15Thousand Farmers – whether as a farmer, advisor, volunteer, or whatever you say. Because isn’t that how ideas like this become reality – because we say so? And we continue to say so?
I find this exciting, I hope lots and lots of people take part.

Sounds interesting. I just returned from San Francisco where a very intersting urban CSA program has been started:
Here’s the concept: Owners of homes with backyards (which can be accessed from the street)donate their yards for use by CSA urban gardeners. The CSA gardens, gives the owner a percentage of the harvested food and then sells the rest through a traditonal CSA model.

I have purchased the book “All New Square Foot Gardening” by Mel Bartholomew. You can grow veggie on your patio or drive way.

I wasn’t able to attend the “15 Thousand Farmers” meeting this morning. Will there be another meeting in the near future?
Thanks.

Thanks for posting this, Michelle! I went on Saturday and the turnout was astounding! It was packed with standing room only and people all the way out the door! I am very excited about their kindergarten-level approach to gardening, because that is right where I am starting out. Anyone who is interested but didn’t get to make the first meeting, fear not. There will be more meetings and information will be made available through the facebook page (15Thousand Farmers) and the website, http://www.15thousandfarmers.com (currently under construction).
