Food, Shopping, Vegan, Vegetarian

Turkey Prices 09_trimmed.jpgRainbow Blossom asked me to let you know that it’s not too late to order turkeys, turkey breasts or whole Thanksgiving meals (traditional or vegan). You’ve got until close of business on Friday November 20 to order your turkeys and/or Thanksgiving meals.

They’ve got three different turkey options. The natural option, which means free range, hormone and antibiotic-free and fed a vegetarian diet comes from from Bowman & Landes in New Carlisle, Ohio.  That’s only about 160 miles away so while it doesn’t fit into a locavores “eat food from within a 100 mile radius” standards it’s pretty close.

The second option is the organic one which means free range, hormone- and antibiotic-free, fed organic vegetarian diet. These also come from Bowman & Landes.

The third option is Heritage. They tell me this is kind of like “heirloom turkeys.” These come from just down the road in Breckinridge County.  Heirloom turkeys reminds me of the very disturbing section in Barbara Kingsolver’s “Animal, Vegetable, Miracle” about trying to get heirloom turkeys to reproduce. I’m shuddering just remember that section of the book. Let’s move on.

Turkey Veg and Trad 09_trimmed.jpgI think it’s very, very cool that Rainbow Blossom is offering a vegan option for their Thanksgiving meals. Good looking out.

Both the traditional and the vegan meal options include stuffing, gravy, cranberry sauce, a choice of sides, dinner rolls and dessert. Obviously the traditional option has turkey while the vegan option has tofurkey.

Speaking of tofurkey did you know that make fake lunch meat slices? I had a tofurkey and cheese sandwich for lunch and it was not bad at all.
