Can’t wait to get downtown one night after dark to check this out.
The windows of 804 East Market Street come to ‘life’ starting September 26th with “Sniff”, a new installation by Brooklyn artist Karolina Sobecka. “Sniff” is computer-generated, 3D-image of a dog, which moves and interacts, sniffs at and plays with the viewer as they move in front of the windows. The project will be displayed after dark through the end of October.
“Sniff” works by integrating a video tracking system and a game engine, which renders the dog in real time and allows him to dynamically change his behavior. The position of each viewer is tracked in front of the window and simple gesture recognition is implemented. Big actions are interpreted as threatening and slow actions directed at the dog (for example hand extended in his direction) are interpreted as friendly. The dog keeps track of the attitude of the viewer and forms a relationship with them over time based on the history of interaction.
Having trouble picturing what this is like? Check the video of the installation in Brooklyn.

i took my wife down to see it on Friday night. Very cool. The funnest part is to stand back and wait for people to wander past it and notice it themselves. Their reactions are priceless. We saw one couple with a couple of dogs and one of the dogs immediately went bonkers. The owner said, “It passes the test.”
