A recent planning meeting for the Jewish Film Festival was held at Al Watan restaurant. I’d never been to Al Watan before but had heard raves from several people so I was game to go. Other than it being hotter than you can even imagine in the place I very much enjoyed my trip to Al Watan. The experience was really winning on two primary levels:
1) I finally got the try shakshuka! It was delightful. The pita my meal came with was tasty but I was all about the shakshuka, highly recommended. There were lots of other vegetarian options on the menu and everyone in our group seemed to enjoy their meals. Next time I go I’m taking B so we can try a couple different things. If anything competes with shakshuka for my affection I’ll let you know.
2) Al Watan has Coke Zero in cans! This is a find of epic proportions. Seriously, I love Coke Zero in a can so very much and most restaurants that don’t have fountain drinks only have Coke or Diet Coke. Diet Coke in a can is oh so gross to me. Thank you, thank you, thank you Al Watan for allowing me to have a tasty beverage with my tasty shakshuka. For the rest of you restaurants that have canned or bottle soft drinks please, please, please get with the program and start stocking Coke Zero. Thank you very much.
I’m not kidding about the heat in Al Watan. It’s a small restaurant with the kitchen right in front and when it gets a little crowded or lots of cooking is going on the back dining room gets really, really warm. Don’t say I didn’t warn you.
