Libraries Are Free But Books Aren’t Drive: Supporting LFPL

May 11, 2009

Community Involvement

I am so pleased to be able to tell you that the Louisville Free Public Library now has an Amazon wishlist up and populated with books they need and we can buy for them. As of this morning the wishlist has 220 items on it, well 218, I bought the two Toni Morrison books they needed. The very several pages are kids books. Yay for kids books but also yay for adult readers so as I mentioned I scrolled on to page 8 to buy the two Toni Morrison titles. I just wanted to mention that in case you had similar inclinations when you’re doing your shopping this morning. Because you are doing some shopping for the LFPL this morning aren’t you?

If my harping on you subtle encouragement isn’t enough let me share this note from Martha Geier who is the manager of Collection Services at LFPL:

It’s always nice to be reminded that the Louisville Free Public Library has friends in the community who want to help. It’s even better when all we have to do is come up with a wish list and let those friends buy us books. Thanks to Michelle at ConsumingLouisville.com, LFPL now has an Amazon Wish List of titles the Library could really use, with prices to fit any donor’s budget.

“Libraries are Free but Books Aren’t Book Drive” is a great way for people to get involved in supporting their local libraries. It is also a fantastic opportunity for us all to work together for the betterment of the community we live in. Thanks for supporting the Louisville Free Public Library!

See how appreciative the library folks are of your potential help? So awesome.

I now officially declare the Consuming Louisville Libraries Are Free but Books Aren’t book drive to be open. I’ll update you on Friday with how the drive is going and hopefully we’ll hear from the LFPL again when they start receiving all those great Amazon boxes later this week or next.

Thank you so much for supporting our library system and doing good in our community. Go now and shop: LFPL Amazon Wishlist!

Do you have any idea if they plan to continue to add books to this list, possibly for different age groups?

  2. Michelle Says:

I’m sure they’ll add books as they need things. They obviously have a big need for young children’s books right now but there are several adult books on the list as well (The Great Gatsby, On the Road, etc). So as these needs get met I’m confident they’ll add more books to address more needs.

  3. William Summer Says:

Michelle, thanks. This is a great cause.
    Ordered:
On the Road – Jack Kerouac
The Great Gatsby – F. Scott Fitzgerald
It’s Okay to Be Different – Todd Parr (kids)

  4. Michelle Says:

Great choices William. Thanks for participating! I almost went with On the Road but then I saw Toni Morrison on the list. I can never say know to Toni Morrison books.

  5. Ken Wilson Says:

    I scored D’Aulaire’s Greek Myths – a book I used as a teacher and Jonas loved as a kid…
I have an old student who writes children’s books – Mark Shulman. Maybe I should just get one of his and send it even without being on the list…

The first book on his list is dedicated to me!

  6. Michelle Says:

Oh that’s wonderful Ken that you got a book you used and your son loved. And I think it would be great if you could get a copy of your old student’s books donated. You sir, are a library supporting rock star.

  7. ken wilson Says:

Maybe they’ll forgive me for still have Secrets of the Martian Moons – due June of 1957…?

  8. Kim Sanders Says:

I love this! I got Where the Wild Things Are (a book I never read as a kid and heartily regretted), The Story of Ferdinand (a personal favorite, much loved when I was young), and Pride and Prejudice. I love the idea of getting children’s books–reading when I was young made the person I am today! This was a great idea.

  9. Alisha Wheatley Says:

    Ordered the following:
How Do Dinosaurs Go to School?
    Tikki Tikki Tembo
    Mouse Paint :)

  10. Katy Miller Says:

Quick question – do I have to purchase and donate through Amazon? I have found several of the books on their wishlist through other vendors at lower prices. I’d love to donate and my dollars could go further if I buy somewhere else, but I’m not sure how to get the books to them if I don’t purchase through amazon.
    K

  11. Michelle Says:

    Oh great choices Alisha.
Katy, our objective with this was to make it as easy as possible for the buyers and the library both so we’re making this a strictly Amazon affair. Well at least my participation point is. You’re welcome to call the library and see if they have an option for just bringing books by to donate (I bet they do). Thanks for shopping around though, that might give us some ideas on how to make the drive even more successful if we do it again in the future.

  12. Michelle Says:

Hark! An update! Here’s the shipping address for the LFPL so I’m guessing if you want to send a book via another vendor you can just send it here:
    Collection Services
    301 York St.
    Louisville, KY 40203
    United States

  13. Eric Truman Says:

I just picked the first two on the list when I looked and then scrolled down to pick another out:
    Wabi Sabi-Mark Reibstein
    Petunia-Roger Duvoisin
Lyle, Lyle, Crocodile (Lyle the Crocodile-Bernard Waber
I think it’s a great idea and I’ll let others know too!

  14. Michelle Says:

Thanks for participating and passing on the word Eric!

  15. Dianna Says:

I bought “In Cold Blood” and “Grapes of Wrath.”

  16. Rob Says:

Thanks for organizing this, Michelle. I’ll say “I knew her when” when you receive a Nobel Prize…
James selected “If you give a pig a pancake”
Emma chose “There was an old lady who swallowed a fly”

  17. Michelle Says:

Thanks for participating Rob and including the kids! You all are awesome.

  18. Ben Says:

Great idea! My wife and I just ordered:

  19. Michelle Says:

Great choices Ben! Thanks so much for being so generous. And can I just tell you how excited I am to see Spike Jonze’s film version of Where the Wild Things Are? So excited. Also excited because Consuming Louisville favorite Ricky Irving worked on Jonze’s new website for the project: http://www.dressedinvalue.com/2009/05/new-work-we-love-you-so/

  20. Janelle Says:

  25. Michelle Says:

Thanks so much for supporting the library Greg! You are the best.

  26. Mary Says:

Hi! The list is great, but have you tried to work out any way for people to buy books for the library from local sources? I will buy some books on the wishlist, but I don’t want to purchase them from Amazon. I’ll take my list to Carmichael’s instead and let them know what’s going on.
    Best wishes, Mary

  27. Michelle Says:

While I’d love to have Carmichael’s participate currently there isn’t any way to shop online at Carmichael’s. To make it as quick and easy as possible for as many people as possible to participate I wanted to go the most direct route, the Amazon wishlist is that. The first books the library received from this drive came from someone in Tuscon, Arizona which is something that could never had happened if we didn’t have an online shopping component be part of the drive. Again, I’d love to have Carmichael’s participate but the key here was to make it as easy as possible for people to support the library. If Carmichael’s can come up with (or has) a way to make it similarly easier I’d be more than happy to switch to Carmichael’s the next time we do this drive (probably in late fall).
