Art, Lecture

One of these days I’m actually going to be familiar with someone speaking at an LGDA event. I feel more and more ignorant each time they throw an interesting event and the speaker or topic is completely new to me. It’s inspiring me to learn though so that’s good right?

The Louisville Graphic Design Association (LGDA) will host a lecture and multimedia presentation by Soho’s highly-praised Rafael Esquer on Thursday, April 16th. A reception will begin at 6:00p.m. with Rafael’s presentation beginning at 7:00p.m. The event will be held at The Green Building at 732 East Market Street, with appetizers and cash bar provided by 732 Social. All attendees will receive a limited edition poster designed by Rafael and printed by Clark & Riggs Printing. Current and new LGDA members can attend the presentation for free, students attend for $5, and non-members for $15. Reservations are encouraged but not required.

LGDA will also host an exclusive dinner with Rafael immediately following the presentation at Wiltshire On Market, a new venture of the Wiltshire Pantry located at 636 East Market. The prix fixe menu will feature the creative cuisine of Chef Coby Ming in an intimate restaurant environment, and reservations are $40 excluding drinks and service. Space is limited, reserve your seats by emailing lgda.rsvp@gmail.com.

A native of the Sonora desert of Mexico, Rafael Esquer has made New York City his home for over a decade. As Creative Director at @radical.media, his group’s work in communication design received the National Design Award in 2004 from the Cooper-Hewitt National Design Museum. Esquer now runs Alfalfa, his own design studio, which is devoted to interdisciplinary projects. Clients have included The New York Times Magazine, Nike, Björk, AIGA, Tommy Boy Records, Target, IBM, Scholastic, and MTV. Widely published, Esquer’s work has won numerous national and international design awards, and some of his pieces are contained in the collection of the Olympic Museum in Lausanne, Switzerland, the Museum of Fine Art in Montreal, the Poster Museum in Poland, and the poster collection of the Library of Congress in Washington DC. Esquer received his BFA from Art Center College of Design. He frequently serves as judge and speaker at national and international design events.
