To celebrate their 100th anniversary of Jewish Family and Vocational Services is donating 100 trees to be planted in Cherokee Park on Sunday December 7, 2008. I like trees, I like Cherokee Park, I like Jewish Family and Vocational Services. So go forth and enjoy the tree planting event.

In honor of the 100th anniversary of Louisville’s nonprofit Jewish Family and Vocational Services (JVFS), 100 trees will be planted to help the Olmsted Parks Conservancy’s $5 million Woodlands Restoration Project, which is restoring the historic beauty of Louisville’s Olmsted Parks.

 Event details:

  • 1:00 p.m., this Sunday, December 7, 2008
  • In Cherokee Park, near the Bernheim Bridge over Beargrass Creek
  • Planting begins of the 100 trees donated by Jewish Family and Vocational Services
  • Event will include members of JFVS, the Olmsted Parks Conservancy and Metro Parks

As part of the Woodlands Restoration Project, the trees will play a significant role in the restoration of Beargrass Creek, which has nearly 40% of its watershed paved. The runoff has threatened the sustainability of the creek channel, and the bridges and roadways along its course. The trees will also help take the place of invasive and non-native plants that are competing with and killing Louisville’s majestic native trees.

Metro Parks Director Mike Heitz says “We’re grateful that JFVS has chosen to invest in our parks and Louisville’s future in this way. Everyone in our community will benefit from the effects of this donation.”
