Today I won’t be hammering you over the head with the notion that you should shop local as much as possible when buying gifts this holiday season I will instead give you this information from the Keep Louisville Weird folks:

When people think of holiday shopping, they often think of fighting their way through heavy traffic and wrestling crowds at the malls. The Louisville Independent Business Alliance (LIBA) wants to remind people that they do have an alternative that comes with plenty of fringe benefits: buying holiday gifts from locally-owned, independent retailers.

By purchasing locally, consumers help to preserve the unique community character of the Metro Louisville area. Dollars spent at community-based merchants also create a multiplier effect in the local economy. Studies have shown that for every $100 spent at a chain, only $13 remains in the community. But spending $100 at a home town business keeps $45 in the community. And when you want to find a gift that’s truly unique, independent businesses are the place to go.

This holiday season, consumers can add one more reason to shop locally: a chance to win $1,000 to spend at any member business. LIBA launched the Holiday Passport Contest on Tuesday, November 25th, at 10am at The Green Building (732 E. Market). The rules are easy: collect receipts from ten member businesses by 1/5/09. Present them for review at one of our sponsor sites (the Louisville Science Center or Wild & Woolly Video), and you’ll be entered to win. Once receipts are verified, they are returned to the owner on the spot.

Just in case you glossed over let me give you the important points again:

  • Shop local! Collect receipts when you shop or dine this holiday season at ten LIBA member businesses between now and 1/5/2009
  • Present them for review at the Louisville Science Center Gift Shop or Wild and Woolly Video. You’ll be entered into a drawing for $1,000 to spend at any of LIBA’s member businesses! (Once we verify your receipts they will be returned to you on the spot.)
