What Was Promised Screening at the Rud

I’ve never heard of this film before so I’m just going to give you all the info directly from the press release. Called What Was Promised it was a nominee for Best Documentary in National Geographic’s All Roads Film Project.

What Was Promised with special appearance by Director/Filmmaker Roshini Thinakaran

Shortly after the overthrow of Saddam Hussein’s regime, the Coalition Provisional Authority (Iraq’s temporary governing body), gave orders to dismantle Iraq’s Armed Forces and security agencies. The plan was to start anew.

What Was Promised looks back at the U.S-led initiative to train and recruit women into Iraq’s New Army and police force after the invasion. Recruitment calls for both sexes seemed to herald a new era of equal rights and democracy for both women and men. Heeding this call, hundreds of Iraqi women chose to put their lives on the line to protect their country and its fledgling democracy. Their stories of the failures to deliver the promised opportunities provide rare insight into a world that has remained in the shadows until now.
