Last week I mentioned that I’d really enjoy learning to speak French in 2009 (well at least start learning, I don’t expect miracles). In response to that statement a nice man emailed to say he’d been working, on his own, on learning French but thought it would be really wonderful if a social group could form around learning and speaking French. I think that sounds like a brilliant idea. I know there is a Spanish conversation group like this already in town but don’t know of anything for French speakers and those hoping to learn French.
So I told the nice man that I’d post about this potential French conversation group to see if there’s any interest in such a group. I think the ideal scenario would be a good mix of speakers at all levels from completely fluent to absolute beginners who meet in a casual environment to converse, teach and learn from each other.
If this sounds interesting to you please drop an email or leave a comment and I’ll put you in touch with the organizer of the group.

I believe Alliance Francaise still has a French conversation group that meets at 7pm the fourth Tuesday of every month at the Gardiner Ln Heine Bros. I’ve had excellent experiences taking French lessons there in the past. They’ve got a lot of great new programs like French cooking classes (and for you vegetarians an entire class devoted to chocolate), lunch hour classes, and recently introduced a beginning Arabic class. Their website is aflouisville.org. Definitely one of Louisville’s many little treasures.

Learning French is on my to-do list as well. I looked into the AFL but don’t yet know if I want to invest the time or money to attend classes. Something casual would be great!
