I love the idea of community gardens. Sometimes, when walking about the city, I’ll imagine empty lots of underused parking lots and imagine them overflowing with rows of food being grown. We need more community gardens in Louisville! The good folks in Clifton are doing their part to make this a reality. On Sunday December 7, 2008 they’re having a planning meeting for the Clifton Community Garden and all are invited.
Exciting to note that you do not have to live in Clifton to be involved with the community garden. It would be awesome to get involved with the Clifton Community Garden and learn all you can and then go back and start working on community gardening efforts in your neighborhood.
Once again I just wanted to remind you that the Clifton Community Garden is still rolling forward! We are currently in a design phase, getting down a site plan to be presented to Sacred Heart Village retirement home and the Louisville historic landmarks committee. We need your ideas! So if you’re excited about being a part of the garden, please come to the next meeting.
The next meeting is December 7th, at 4 PM at United Crescent Hill Ministries (the round brick building at the corner of Frankfort Ave. and State St- come on in the front door and to the conference room on the left or right).
Meetings will be regular from here on, and we will keep you updated. Don’t be shy- come on in!
A little background: A lease agreement has been signed with Sacred Heart Village retirement home and a formal committee has formed (as a subcommittee of the Clifton Community Council). THE COMMITTEE IS OPEN TO ANYONE AND EVERYONE WHO WANTS TO BE INVOLVED IN THE DESIGN CONSTRUCTION, MAINTENANCE, OR ORGANIZING OF THE GARDEN. Anyone, regardless of residence inside or outside of Clifton, may join the committee to offer ideas for what they would like to see happen in the garden, and all proposals will be voted on by the committee. We’d like to maintain a focus on organic gardening and sustainable resource management and construction practices.

I am starting a 501c3 that organizes Louisville community garden resources, guerrilla gardening events, and raising community awareness of the benefits of eating locally. As of now I am in the process of looking for people interested in becoming board members of this organization. Please contact me if interested.
We had our first event this past week, creating and spreading wild flower seed balls, and it was a resounding success and hope to have more soon, but I am more concerned at this point about with learning what organizations are currently operating in Louisville that might have some overlap with the previously stated goals. Any info would be great.
Warmest regards,
Mason

I attended the 15kfarmers meeting Henie Bros.Coffee held last saturday and I announced that I had 1-1/4 acres of property near the “Clifton Community Garden” site that could be shared by several close communities for a much larger organic “Community Garden” I mentioned the “Clifton Community Garden” will be developed by the owners as soon as they are ready to expand and build another housing project for the elderly. I explained that I held half ownership of the 1-1/4 acres that is nearby on Lexington Road at the Spring Street intersection and it was comming up for sale real soon to settle an estate. I said I would be willing to DONATE most of my 1/2 intrest in it towards something that could benefit the local area and city at large. The site sits in the “Irish Hill” neighborhood near the Breslin Pool. Butchertown, Clifton and The Cherokee Triangle are just a few blocks or minutes away.
This beautiful area with it’s trees and surrounded by a creek, can be
transformed from a industrial site into a garden where organic food can be grown, maybe a simple hydroponic green-house (tent-like), compost area, flowers, bees, and worm farm. Some roof water can be filtered from the house that sits on the hill.
I talked to some city employees about the possibility for the city to purchase the land for the neighborhood project and was told if enough
people made a effort to aproach the city, they would research finding funds. If you have any ideas or intrest in pursuing this opportunity, please give me a call or e-mail. Please see the Heine Bros. web-site
where they talked about the 15 thousand farmers – Movement
