Bourbon Barrel Foods Vanilla Sugar is a Winner

cranberrybread.jpgI normally don’t tell you about my baking adventures but since one relates to a Louisville business I wanted to share and besides Thanksgiving is two days from now so a baking post seems appropriate.

When the power was out thanks to Ike (8 days at my house!) Bourbon Barrel Foods sent me a little care package to cheer me up. It contained some of their vanilla extract and bourbon vanilla sugar. I used the vanilla extract up pretty quickly. It was good but I probably won’t be switching from my normal brand of vanilla extract.

I only got around to testing the bourbon vanilla sugar out last week. I’ve been baking various breads (banana bread, banana cranberry bread, cranberry bread) to find the one bread I’ll bake and give away to friends and associates during the holiday season. For one of the recipes I sprinkled a generous amount of Bourbon Barrel Foods Bourbon Vanilla Sugar on top of the cranberry bread dough (seen in the photo above). This created a really nice, flavorful, light crust on top. Inarticulate tasters described it thusly: “oh! sugary crust is yummy.”

The vanilla taste to the sugar is subtle but it’s there and the coarseness of the natural sugar makes it a perfect dusting sugar to use like I did with my cranberry bread. Highly recommended. Buy online or at Whole Foods and I’m sure it’s available at other locations around town, I just don’t know them all.
