Back in the winter I attended the grand opening party for Plexus Contemporary art gallery. I was really impressed by the space and the
Plexus Contemporary is proud to announce an exhibit of fresh new talent from eight young artists and art students from across the country with Build A Fire.
Addressing issues of contemporary art production, Build A Fire presents work by young artists influenced by the presence of technology as well as the media that it delivers. The works incorporate this influence into their very material makeup, as a reference point taken as an inescapable given. This sort of comfort with digital media leaves the artists free to address their own topics, and accounts for the diverse, seemingly discontinuous dialogue between the works. Keeping connections with the past, Build A Fire looks for ways to identify itself with the present.
That’s a little too wonky for me so here’s the email info I got director from Bryce Hudson, the very cool artist who rehabbed the building and built the Plexus Contemporary space.
An exhibition of new media works by 8 artists, all recent graduates or
soon-to-be graduates of schools in New York, Baltimore and Southern
California. Parsons, Pratt, Cooper Union, Mica (Baltimore) to name a
few. The work is very forward-thinking and forward-moving (much like
building a contemporary art space in Portland) and addresses art
production in its present state; art that deals with the artist’s own
specific topics by artists who grew up in the digital age. Some of the
work is only accessible via the web!
That sounds very, very cool. The exhibit will run from July 18-August 8. The opening is next Friday July 5PM – 10pm.
