April is National Poetry Month and Louisville is going to celebrate it right with the month long Thousand Poets festival. From organizer Jessica Farquhar.
“…a month-long festival here in Louisville to celebrate National Poetry Month, and it all starts with a bang this Friday, April 4th! In conjunction with the Market Street trolley hop, we’ll have poetry in the galleries and some other special treats. I’d like to highlight the music that’ll be taking place that night in the St. John Renaissance Theater (637 E. Market-across from Red Tree).
The Big Time Band will perform after fabulous local poets Erin Keane and Adam Day read. Closing the show at 10 will be Brett Eugene Ralph, giving what he calls ” a one-time-only ‘chamber country’ performance backed by Peter Searcy on cello and Jamie Daniel on violin. ” Admission is five dollars, and the show is all-ages.
Saturday night, April 5th, at uzoMa art space (1813 Frankfort Ave), Brett will read from Black Sabbatical, his debut poetry collection, which will be published by Sarabande Books in 2009. (Free admission.)”

Are there going to be any poetry slams going down this month? If it were an open mic slam, I’d compete. Otherwise, I’d love just to see a good slam.

I don’t know the answer to that Cory but I’ve put in an email to the organizers about it. Hopefully we’ll get a response soon on it.

Hi, Cory.
No one has organized a poetry slam yet, but I’d love to see you put one together! We’d happily publicize it on the festival web site. Our calendar is made up of events organized by several different people and groups–our goal is to connect the dots!
Hope to see you during National Poetry Month,
Jessica Farquhar
