Free Jamie Barnes Show at Quills

Jamie Barnes - mag2.jpgI saw a very cool poster (designed by Tyler Deeb) advertising Jamie Barnes performing at Quills this Friday December 21, 2007. I’ve never heard of Jamie Barnes before today but man am I glad I saw that poster (and also wondering how I’ve missed out on Barnes all this time and wondering why there isn’t a digital version of that poster floating around online). Billboard Magazine’s blog put Barnes in the category of “Wuss Rock” with such Consuming Louisville favorites as Iron and Wine, Cat Power and Jose Gonzalez (I’d also add Sufjan Stevens to that list).

We
mean it
in the kindest, sweetest sense when we say wuss. Think Iron
& Wine, Jose Gonzalez, Cat Power… we love us some wusses.

I too love the wuss rock and after listening to a few tracks online I too love Jamie Barnes. Seriously. If you like Iron and Wine you’d be doing yourself a horrible disservice by not going to Quills on Friday night to see Jamie Barnes perform, particularly given that it’s a free show. Of course you’d be able to do that if you hadn’t already promised to take your mother out for a nice holiday dinner on Friday night. Not that I’m bitter.

Since I can’t make the show I’m doing the next best thing by heading out to pick up Barnes’s most recent record The Recalibrated Heart. I suggest you do the same or if you don’t need to own the physical CD the Amazon.com mp3 store has the album available for a steal at $7.99. Barnes will also be taking part in WFPK’s Louisville Songwriters Holiday Showcase edition of Live Lunch on Friday with Danny Flanigan, John Mann, Leigh Ann Yost and Brigid Kaelin. Listen to the show live at noon on WFPK.

P.S. Barnes’s version of Joy to the World (available on the Sojourn Music Christmas record Advent Songs) is now tied with Clem Snide’s version as my favorite version of that Christmas standard ever.
